Abstract
Sporadic cases of meningococcal meningitis are seen worldwide. The highest annual incidence of meningococcal disease in the world occurs in the African meningitis belt. The Hajj has also been linked to various outbreaks of meningococcal disease. Therefore, meningococcal meningitis prevention is important for travellers who are visiting areas where there is an increased risk of disease. The prevalence of meningococcal serogroups in different countries, and the prevention of meningococcal disease using meningococcal vaccines, are discussed in this article.
