Gastro-oesophageal reflux in infants

  • SG Lala

Abstract

Gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR) in infancy is an extremely common self-limiting physiological condition that requires no pharmacological therapy. Despite this, it often causes great parental concern and anxiety. A rational and conservative (or non-pharmacological) approach to management will reassure parents in the majority of instances. Nonetheless, clinicians and nurse practitioners should be aware that GOR can cause complications in a very small proportion of infants, resulting in gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). If GORD is suspected, infants should be referred to a paediatrician for diagnostic evaluation and specific treatment.
