Managing the TB tsunami in South Africa

Abstract
Although tuberculosis (TB) was declared a global emergency over a decade ago it has not received the exposure it has needed. This has resulted in the rapid spread of the disease especially in developing countries already ravaged by HIV and AIDS. Poor management of patients on TB treatment has resulted in drug resistance to available drugs and the emergence of a virtually untreatable form of TB. Improved management of patients living with TB is the best way to improve the spread of this infectious disease and is a role that must be undertaken by the nurse.
