Heartburn
Abstract
Heartburn is defined as a substernal burning sensation or pain that rises in the chest and may radiate into the neck, throat, or even face, and is caused by acidification of the oesophagus. Normally, acid should stay in the stomach but when it rises up into the oesophagus, patients will complain of: • A warm feeling or burning under the sternum. • Burping, belching or eructation (gas escaping from the stomach through the mouth). • A taste of old food or stomach contents in the mouth.
