Vaccines given at birth
Keywords: birth vaccines
AbstractImmunisation is one of the most important weapons used to protect individuals and the community from serious diseases. In South Africa, an expanded programme on immunisation (EPI) starts at birth with the Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG), and an attenuated oral polio vaccine (OPV). In certain circumstances, a hepatitis B vaccine may also be given at birth. In this article, we will focus on the indications, administration, adverse effects and precautions associated with use of the OPV and BCG vaccinations.
